Nigeria’s national under-19 boys volleyball team recorded their first victory at the ongoing FIVB Under-19 Boys Volleyball World Cup in Tehran, Iran by winning 3-2 against Cuba on Wednesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria won the first and second sets 25-10 25-20 to take the game to 2-0.
The Cubans fought back to win the third and fourth sets 22-25 20-25 to level the game 2-2.
An emphatic 15-13 scoreline in favour of Nigeria in the fifth set clinched the game at 3-2, enabling Nigeria to hope for placement between 13th and 14th in the classification.
Musa Nimrod, Chairman of Caretaker Committee of Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), lauded the players’ fighting spirit in the game against Cuba.
He then charged them to put in their best in the 13th position game on Thursday.
“I am happy Nigeria finally recorded its first win at the championship today. This shows that there is hope for Nigerian volleyball. The boys played with their heart, mind and hands, which eventually led to the win in the fifth set.
“Two years ago, we finished in the 14th position in Tunisia, and I am charging them to win their last match and surpass the previous record set by their seniors,” Nimrod said.
The 2021 FIVB Under-19 Boys Volleyball World Championship, which began on Aug. 24, will end on Thursday.
