The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) on Tuesday donated 1,684 mobile phones to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kaduna State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the police and NSCDC received 842 mobile phones each, alongside spare batteries.
The Coordinator of SON in Kaduna, Mr Qasseem Yahya, said that the mobile phones were seized from importers who violated import regulations.
According to him, the donation is meant to enhance the productivity of the security agencies.
“The mobile phones, which we seized from importers who violated import regulations, automatically became government’s property.
“The security situations we are in today made the Director-General of SON, Alhaji Farouk Salim, to deem it fit to donate the mobile phones to security agencies to enhance their work,’’ Yahya said.
Receiving the phones at the headquarters of the police command, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Mudassiru Abdullahi, said the phones would invigorate speed and efficiency in their service delivery to the public.
Abdullahi expressed gratitude, saying, “I am a lucky person, as I took over the leadership of the command a week ago, Such donation from SON would go a long way in solving some of our challenges, especially in the field.
“We see SON usually burning such kind of seized item, but donating it to us is a wise decision and at the right time. We will distribute them to our tactical teams on the field.
“I have initial plans of purchasing mobiles phones to our teams on the field and SON has already motivated us; it will go a long way in aiding our operations.”
While pledging to use the phones judiciously, he urged other relevant stakeholders to emulate SON.
He assured the organisation of the command’s readiness to assist in ways geared towards riding the markets of substandard products and protecting the lives and property of the people.
Similarly, the state Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Godwin Miebi, had at the corps headquarters in Kaduna, appreciated SON for the donation.
Miebi, who was represented by his deputy, Ndukwe Kalu, acknowledged the cordial relationship between the two organisations.
According to him, the act will go a long way in the fight against criminality, considering the vital role of technology in fighting crime.
He restated the commitment of the corps in aiding the fight against substandard goods in Nigerian markets.
