The Nigerian Youth Compact on Covid-19 (NYCC-19) held the 2nd edition of ‘One Stop Youth Talk’ program on June, 18th 2020. It was an interactive section anchored by the head of publicity ‘Millicient Umoru Osakwa’.
One Stop Youth Talk on Covid-19 is a weekly Zoom Live streaming program organized by Nigeria Youth Compact on Covid-19 (NYCC-19) every Thursday. It is a platform where youths from different works of life come together to discuss matters surrounding the effect of COVID-19 and share ideas pertaining post-COVID-19.
This edition focused on the Covid-19 effect on Livelihood, Education and Community; Among the features were the National Steering Chairman of Nigeria Youth Compact on Covid-19 ‘Comrade Gambo Haruna’, Vice Chairman/Head of State Affairs ‘Prince Echem’, Head of Data/Statistics ‘Mr Oche Precious Edeh’ and the Head of Palliatives ‘Patience Eze’.
The Session lasted for over 2 hours featuring youths across the country discussing how to curtail the pandemic ravaging the nation and the way forward. The Chairman ‘Gambo Haruna’ gave a welcoming speech and elaborated more on the objectives of the Youth Compact.
However, the guest speaker of the day, Ms Kaliat Johanna, a senior lecturer, at the Department of Architecture, Kaduna State University, talked about Education, the way forward as we fight the pandemic across the nation.
She also stated that the pandemic has solved the problem of inequality in the education sector in terms of the e-learning systems adopted in the education sector which has revealed the silver lining of Covid-19 (the acceleration in E-learning).
“Due to the effect of covid-19 on the nations economy, some graduates might end up opting for low paying jobs” said Ms. Kaliat Johanna.
While Mr. Henry Okorie, a Youth Leader from Abia State, Isikwuato L.G.A. talked about the effect of the pandemic on the livelihood of youths; Okereke Sandra Daberechi from the rural area of Abia State spoke on the effect on covid-19 on the Community. She stated that the youths in the rural community needs sensitization to enable them adhere to the preventive measure on Covid-19.
Ms Patience Ezeh, the Head of Palliatives NYCC-19 spoke from the angle of the farmers and artisans who depend on daily source of income. She stated that Nigeria should invest more on Agriculture to ensure food security.
Going further, Mr. Oche P. Eche, the head of Data/Statistics, NYCC-19 gave an update on the data collected so far. He stated that over 10,000 youths from across the 36 states of the federation have registered their data. He urged more youths to do same in order to be captured in this scheme.
According to the Ms. Kaliat, the NYCC-19 can work hand in hand with the government in the provision of E-Learning equipment such as Laptops, Android phones and power supply.
Mr. Prince Echem stated that setting up of state structures are currently ongoing and by next week the various selected state coordinators will be published.
In conclusion, the head of advisory board ‘Mr. Uzoh Ifeanyi’ gave his vote of thanks to all the partners of NYCC-19, the guest speakers and the various youths that participated. He encouraged the steering committee of this project and assured that the necessary funding for the project will be made available soon.
According to Ms. Millicient Umoru, all schools should be fumigated and necessary protective kits should be made available for students before school re-open.
