The Michael Imoudu National Institute For Labour Studies (MINILS) has fed 35 students of Olunlade Senior Secondary School, Ilorin, to mark the maiden edition of the annual birthday celebration of former South African President, Nelson Mandela.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the celebration attracted eminent dignitaries from the organised labour, academic and the general public.
The institute educated the students on the importance of the celebration of the life and times of the late South African president.
The Director-General of the institute, Mr Issa Aremu, said at the event that they were inspired to join the progressive world, to feed and educate 35 students as part of its corporate social responsibility.
“In doing so, MINILS wishes to complement the globally acknowledged social protection measures of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in feeding Nigerians,” he said.
Aremu said the Nelson Mandela International Day is meant to honour the great legacy of Mandela and his values through community services and volunteerism.
“This day also celebrates a campaign known as ‘46664‘, his Robben Island prison number, which was originally launched to create awareness about HIV and AIDS.
“On this day, people are expected to pay attention to the serious issues happening around the world and warn those who affect the peace, security and well-being of nations.
“The theme for this year’s Nelson Mandela International Day is One Hand Can Feed Another,” the director-general.
Highlight of the event was the feeding of the 35 students and distribution of Nelson Mandela vests to them by the wife of the director-general, Hajia Khadijat lssa-Aremu.
NAN recalls that July 18 every year is set aside by the United Nations for the remembrance and birthday of the late South African President, Nelson Mandela.
