Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Mr Umar Muri, on Saturday in Kaduna, launched a book on widows of deceased policemen, appealling to people  to assist them.
The book, titled “Police Widows at Crossroads”,  was written by Mr Idris Danmusa, Director, Quality Assurance, Force Education Unit Headquarters, Abuja.
It highlights the challenges of widows in general, and  wives of deceased police personnel in particular.
The commissioner said the society owed it a duty to appreciate the sacrifice made by husbands of the widows, adding that the best way of expressing such appreciation was to come to their aid in times of need.
“Catering for widows, orphans and the less privilege is a duty enshrined in the Holy books of the two predominant religions in this country.
“The one who looks after and works for a widow, and for a poor person, is like a warrior fighting for Allah’s cause.” he said
According to him, the book is an asset considering the increase in number  of widows being recorded in the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.
Muri stated that his command had been of assistance to the widows, recollecting that three months ago, 800 widows were provided with food items and clothes, among others items.
“The tears that rolled down the cheeks of some of the beneficiaries on that day left us with a clear message that the widows are facing series of challenges, most of which were highlighted in the book”, he said.
He described as apt, the timing of the publication considering the current security challenges resulting in death of security personnel and corresponding rise in number of widows.
Also in her remarks, the Chairperson, Police Officers Wives Association, Kaduna Chapter, Hajiya Aisha Muri, commended the author of the book.
According to her, his effort will motivate people to take up the challenge of conducting research in areas that will impact positively on the less privileged in the society, particularly widows and orphans.
Speaking at the occasion, author of the book, Danmusa said, “Police Widow at Crossroad” was written using materials garnered from past experience.
He expressed optimism that the book would serve the purpose intended

The Zamfara State Police Command, on Tuesday, refuted reports claiming that armed bandits
abducted 60 passengers along the Sokoto-Gusau highway on July 25.
A statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Muhammad Shehu, however, confirmed the abduction of 11 passengers on the highway, with two of the abducted passengers already rescued by police operatives, while efforts are on to rescue the remaining nine from their captors.
“The attention of the Zamfara State Police Command has been drawn to the above story trending on social and some conventional media that armed bandits blocked Sokoto – Gusau road and abducted 60 people travelling from Sokoto to Abuja.
“The command wishes to debunk the story and viewed it as inaccurate and a calculated attempt by some mischief makers  to create fear and apprehension into the minds of the general public, especially commuters.
“For the avoidance of doubt and for purposes of clarity, the command is hereby giving the accurate report of the incident”, the PPRO said.
“On Sunday 25th July, 2021, a large number of armed bandits blocked a Toyota bus belonging to the Sokoto State Mass Transit and abducted 11 passengers, who were travelling  from Sokoto to Abuja along the Sokoto-Gusau road in Bakura LGA,” Shehu said.
“Police Tactical operatives attached to ‘Operation Restore Peace’ were alerted and they quickly mobilized to the location and dislodged the hoodlums, who had blocked many vehicles for the purpose of abduction.
“The road was instantly cleared for motorists and other road users and more police operatives reinforced to improve the security and safety of commuters.
“In the course of mopping up the scene, a Toyota bus belonging to the Sokoto State Mass Transit was sighted empty and it was revealed that 11 passengers, including the driver, were abducted and taken into the bush before the arrival of the police.
“The operatives embarked on search and rescue operation in the surrounding bushes with a  view to rescuing the kidnapped victims.
“Two persons, who were left far behind with other hoodlums, were abandoned by their captors for fear of being neutralized  by the Police operatives, the remaining nine victims were, however, taken into the forest.
“The command is currently employing various search and rescue strategies aimed at rescuing the victims safely. In view of this, the command enjoins members of the public to discountenance the purported abduction of 60 persons”, Shehu added.
Members of the press are also urged to always verify the authenticity of any information they receive before going public, the PPRO said.

Insecurity: Matawalle tasks northern leaders on unity

Published

July 26, 2021

Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara on Sunday appealed to northern leaders to unite and end the incessant banditry and kidnapping ravaging the region.

Matawalle made call in a presentation: “Fight against banditry in North West, Nigeria; challenges and solutions”, at the annual lecture by Arewa Media Writers Association in Kaduna.

Matawalle, represented by his Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Ibrahim Dosara, attributed the lingering security challenges confronting the region to lack of unity among the leaders that allowed criminals turn the region into a killing field.

He noted that banditry ravaging the north western states, if not urgently tackled, would consume the entire northern region and the country at large.

“Unless we all wake up to the situation, the war against banditry in the North West will remain a challenge that has the potential to swallow the region and the country at large. We need to get to the roots of the situation and stop politicising it,” he said.

The governor urged the northern leaders to urgently set aside their differences and proffer lasting solutions to the banditry and kidnapping before the situation got out of hand.

He, however, averred that the activities of the bandits in the region was orchestrated by age-long injustice and leadership failure.

Matawalle said that some politicians were taking advantage of the situation to achieve political goals.

“Unless we all wake up to the situation, the war against banditry in the north west will remain a significant security challenge that has the potential to swallow the region and the country.

“The destruction that banditry is wreaking on the region’s people and economy is unfathomable,” he said.

Matawalle clarified that the much talked about mining in Zamfara was not responsible for banditry as many were made to believe.

He said bandit activities in Shinkafi and Zurmi local governments remained the hotbed even when there are no mining activities in those areas.

“When I took over office on May 29th, 2019, Zamfara State had already been mired in a serious security crisis for over a decade, marked by banditry, livestock rustling, kidnapping and a host of other crimes.

“On almost daily basis, the state was in the news for bloodletting, fire, pillage and significant displacement of people, particularly those living in rural areas.

“The historical, economic, social and cultural ties between the dominant communities of Fulani and Hausa were ruptured; farming activities across the state were halted, and commercial activities were crippled.

“With poverty on the increase and food security seriously affected by the crisis, the state was on the verge of a catastrophic social eruption capable of destabilising our communities and the northwest subregion.

“Rural banditry in Zamfara and other parts of the North, in my opinion, is a result of the progressive degradation of our moral standards and a culture of greed fed by an unfettered need for material goods.

“It is evident, therefore, that we, the leaders, are responsible for the plight of the North. The North lacks responsible leadership to steer it through our time’s uncharted waters.

“Reluctance by the affected states to embrace peace dialogue, which would have deprived the recalcitrant bandits currently tormenting our people of safe corridors in the region.

“Our ruling elite has no vision for the region beyond gaining political power. We have all seen how the elites in the Southeast and Southwest respond in unison to all matters concerning their regions’ development.

“We have seen how they have a defined agenda and are relentless in their pursuit of regional development.

“The reluctance by the affected states to embrace peace dialogue, lack of support from a section of politicians that wish to take advantage of the situation to achieve political ends are top challenges slowing down the peace efforts in the region,” he lamented.

He, therefore, appealed to leaders of the region to wake up from their lethargy and unite in combating this grave challenge of banditry, stressing that “we need to get to the roots of the situation, stop politicising it and act decisively”.

Earlier, the National Secretary of the association, Mr Haider Hashim, said Arewa Media Writers was established for public enlightenment on peaceful coexistence, unity and understanding among Nigerians.

“It is an amalgamated group of different members of teeming youths who are mainly users of social media, seasoned journalists and public affairs analysts with a vast interest in politics, national development and cohesion from the Northern region,” he said.

The Police Command in Kaduna State says it has arrested five suspects over alleged unlawful possession of firearms.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday in Kaduna.

Jalige said that their arrests followed a report received by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Kubacha.

He said that the DPO had acted on the information received on July 24 that the suspects, armed with dangerous weapons, were engaged in unwholesome activities in Kenyi village in Kagarko Local Government Area of the state.

The police spokesman said that the suspects and some of the villagers had allegedly threatened the peaceful coexistence of the people over disputed piece of land.

He said that the situation had deteriorated to a boiling point, resulting in one of the warring parties threatening to kill their opponents with dangerous weapons.

“On receipt of the information, the DPO immediately mobilised to the scene, swiftly averted what would have been a tragedy and arrested the five suspects, all from Kenyi village.

“Items recovered from the suspects included an AK-47 rifle, loaded with 29 rounds of live 7.62 x 39mm. ammunitions and a 9 x 18mm. Makarov pistol, loaded with seven rounds of 9mm live ammunitions,” he said.

Jalige added that the police operatives’ swift response not only forestalled “the foreseeable calamity but also restored normalcy in the community.”

He said that investigation had been unravelling the circumstances behind the fracas and the source of the illegal firearms.

The police spokesman quoted the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Umar Muri, as urging communities in the state to always embrace dialogue as an alternative dispute resolution rather than violence which might result in disastrous consequences.

“The commissioner also pledged to dispassionately investigate the incident and prosecute all those found culpable, to serve as deterrent to others,” Jalige said.
