Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo, on Thursday inaugurated the 6th Governing Council in its 22 years of existence as the first private university in the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 16 members of the 5th governing council of the institution were re-appointed to serve another three-year term.
Performing the ceremony, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Chancellor of the university, charged the council to put all cards on the table for the advancement of the university’s corporate objectives.
Igbinedion urged the council to strive and move the university from “excellence to eminence” specifically with regard to its 2021-2025 strategic plan.
The chancellor, represented by the Deputy Chancellor, Lucky Igbinedion, said the fact that majority members of the new council were from the 5th one, spoke volume about their accomplishments.
“Let me place on record the sincere gratitude of the Board of Regents for the positive contributions you have made so far to the growth and development of Igbinedion University.
“I want to particularly welcome the new members on board and thank you for accepting to be part of the history in making.
“Without doubt, the 6th governing council comprises the finest technocrats and professionals with varied talents, expertise and experience required to advance the mission and vision of this university,’’ he said.
He expressed optimism that the new governing council would serve the institution with the best of their abilities and justify the trust reposed in them.
The university’s founder asserted that the 22-year-old institution had become the toast and pride of private university education in the country.
He said the task to improve on the institution’s score card was urgent and rested squarely on the 6th governing council.
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Sheikh Abdullahi, the Chairman of the counci, said it was a great honour he carrying on with the task.
Abdullahi underscored the for experience, saying that the re-appointment was another opportunity to make things better.
“`Our commitment will make things better and we are committed to make the place better.
“We shall be committed to leave the school better than we met it so as to make the chancellor and school proud for finding us worthy of the appointments,’’ he said.
Mr Gregory Ogbeifun, who spoke on behalf of the four new members, also expressed delight for being part of the team.
He pledged their commitment to the development of the university.
NAN reports that the 20-man council comprises experts, professionals and academics.
