President George Weah has said that late Gen Joshua Dogonyaro will be remembered for his determination and sacrifice to Liberians in their trying times.
Weah made this known on Thursday during the Service of Songs in honour of the late general at the COCIC Church Headquarters in Jos.
Represented by Liberian Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Al-Hassan Conteh, Weah said, “we have come to Nigeria to mourn with the family and Nigerians as our mark of honour to the sacrifice he made for us in our trial times.”
“Liberia is what it is today because of the late general’s sacrifice. The people of Liberia mourn this great loss, which is also a painful one to ECOWAS as a whole, “Conteh also spoke through an aide, Mr Francis James.
Also speaking on the occasion, President Muhammadu Buhari described Dogonyaro as a “great son of Plateau” and a “patriotic Nigerian Citizen” who have served the nation and international community very well.
Represented by Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Pauline Tallen, Buhari, pointed out that the general left a legacy that all young Nigerians should emulate towards building the nation to greater heights.
Buhari said, “Lt-Gen. Dogonyaro had sacrificed for the nation and had lived and served God well even after retirement from the military.”
While praying to God to grant the family and people of Plateau and Nigerians the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, the president prayed God to grant his soul peaceful eternal rest.
Also speaking, Gov. Simon Lalong, said that the people of Plateau will greatly miss the general for his immense words of wisdom towards the administration of the state to successive administrations.
Lalong, represented by his deputy, Prof Sonny Tyeoden, said, “though he (Dogonyaro) was not a politician, he always meet us in private and advise us on what to do in moments of needs as a government.”
The COCIN Church President, Rev (Prof) Dachomo Datiri, in his sermon, said that the general chose to die the death of the righteous and so “it is a gain to him in Christ Jesus.”
Reading from Phil 1:21 and Gal 2:20, Datiri, said that Dogonyaro had, immediately after retirement, chose Christ and served Him till his death and therefore his (general’s) death was a heavenly home return that deserves celebration and not crying.
“Those who died in righteousness like Dogonyaro, gain heaven, God’s love, glory, honour, eternal Royal Crown, perfection and partake in the magnificent marriage supper of the Lamb, ” he explained.
The cleric called on Christians to live a life of holiness and righteousness so that when death comes, it shall be a sleep into Peaceful eternal rest with God in Heaven and not in Hell.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that military officers and family members gave testimonies on the life of the general.
