The Presidency has approved the establishment of a National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons(NCCSALW), which is part of the ongoing restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture to address rising threats and strengthen regional mechanism for the control, prevention and regulation of Small Arms and Light Weapons.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Presidency on Monday. They added that the agency would be domiciled in the Office of the National Security Adviser.
Below are the important points you should know about NCCSALW
- The NCCSALW replaces the defunct Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons and shall serve as the institutional mechanism for policy guidance, research and monitoring of all aspects of Small Arms and Light Weapons.
- This decision is part of the ongoing restructuring of Nigeria’s security architecture to address emerging threats and strengthen regional mechanisms for the control, prevention and regulation of SALW.
- The impact of the proliferation of SALW across national borders in Africa and the Sahel region has resulted in terrorism, human trafficking, organized crime, and insurrections in West Africa and Nigeria.
- the new Centre will be fulfilling the requirements of the ECOWAS Moratorium on Import, Export, and Manufacture of Light Weapons as well as the UN Plan of Action to prevent, combat, and eradicate the illicit trade in SALW.
The FG added that the center would be led by a National Coordinator, Rtd. Major General AM Dikko, who has served in various capacities in and outside Nigeria. He was a Course Director at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Centre and Chief Instructor of the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre.

These delegates from the Directorate of Security, Safety and Intelligence of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, led by its Director, Comrade Saleh Sufyan; Secretary, Comrade Bruno Ogumerem and others paid Hon. Sani Jaji a courtesy call at the National Assembly.
A House of Representatives member, representing Namoda/Birnin/Magaji Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, under the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji, has frowned at the security challenges facing the country and has expressed his displeasure to these delegates.
This came after the Nigeria’s porous boarder became a major threat to National security. The lawmaker also faulted the involvement of the youths in creating tension and destabilizing the country.
However, he expressed delight for the visit, stating that he is impressed with the Directorate outline of activities, concept, wisdom and articulation towards the visit.

Jaji assured the Directorate for their support from his office to excel in their daily youth activism, urging them to stay focused. He added that his office is trying to make sure that crimes were been curtailed especially through the proposed Bill on fire Arms.
He also advised youths to “desist from religious fanaticism, human trafficking, drug abuse, assassination, armed robbery, cult activities, farmers and herdsmen clashes, drug trafficking and other corrupt and violent practices.
He said, “People are taking advantage of our porous borders to smuggle in people, fire arms and Drugs. “If the boarders are well secured, the security challenges will be limited.”
Jaji called on the directorate to remain focused on their target, assuring them of support from his office in order to excel in their daily youth activism.
He said “The youths should concentrate on what they can offer to the nation through active participation in proffering solutions to the security issues.
