Amaechi solicits military protection for rail projects

Minister of Transportation Chibuike Amaechi has called on the Nigerian Army to provide security protection for the workers on Kaduna-Kano, Kano-Maradi and Maiduguri-Port Harcourt rail lines projects that will begin soon.

Amaechi made the call when he visited the Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya on courtesy call on Friday in Abuja.

He said that the Kaduna-Kano rail line project was billed to start later this month while works on Kano-Maradi and Maiduguri-Port Harcourt lines would to begin in July.

He said the request became necessary due to the security challenges facing the country.

He added that the presence of military and other security agencies in various construction sites would boost the morale of the workers and give the expatriates good sense of security in all construction sites across the country.

According to him, the work on Kaduna-Kano rail line will start this week and there are Nigerians and Chinese that will be working on the project and we need security presence.

The minister further revealed that some railway projects would be channeled through military establishments particularly the rail track linking Kaduna and Kano which was designed to pass through the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

He said that if the military would allow the ministry to access such areas, it would greatly reduce the construction costs and enhance the development of the barracks environment.

Responding, the COAS, Maj.-Gen. Yahaya, commended the minister for the visit, adding that it would provide an avenue for the army and other agencies of government to deliberate on issues of national development.

Yahaya assured the minister of the readiness of Nigerian army to provide the needed support for the successful execution of the rail projects across the country.

He said that the Nigerian Army would stand with any programme or project that would enhance national development and improves the welfare of the citizenry.

According to him, good rail system will also be beneficial to the military.

“It is pleasing to note what you have been able to do in the rail sector, especially the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan lines among others.

“We are willing and ready to provide security required to ensure the safety of the workers on the projects,” he said.

Troops sustain onslaught against bandits in N/West, N/Central — DHQ

The Defence Headquarters says the military has sustained onslaught against bandits, kidnappers and other criminals by denying them freedom of action in the North West and North Central zones of the country.

Brig.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko, Acting Director, Defence Media Operation, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the military operations across the country between June 3, and June 16, on Thursday in Abuja.

Onyeuko said that troops had continued to carry out ambushes, aggressive fighting patrols, air raids, sustained air Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance patrols as well as cordon and search operations.

He said that troops had on June 3, intercepted and neutralised some gunrunners who were in possession of assorted arms and ammunition between Naimaimai Village and Sabon Birni in Sokoto State.

He also disclosed that the Air Component conducted air raids on bandits’ enclaves at Jibia area of Katsina State on June 6, killing scores of bandits.

“In same vein, troops while on aggressive fighting patrol arrested some kidnappers and rescued some of their victims at Bena Market in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi.

“During the operation, large caches of arms and ammunition and equipment as well as vehicles were captured from the criminal elements.

“Troops have continued to dominate the theatre of operation with aggressive patrols and sustained air intelligence surveillance to deny bandits freedom of operation,” he said.

In the North Central, Onyeuko said the troops of Operation Safe Haven, have continued to record successes in kinetic and non-kinetic operations in Plateau.

He said the troops had on June 5, ambushed and arrested some cultists who reportedly belong to a criminal gang that attacks and robs commuters and dispossess’ them of their belongings at Terminus general area of Jos.

He said that the feat was achieved following credible intelligence.

According to him, troops on patrol on same day arrested a notorious kidnapper, who has been on the wanted list of security agents, by name Halilu Umaru, around Mangu Market of the state.

He said that Umaru was in possession of assorted arms and ammunition and other dangerous weapons at the time of arrest.
The defence spokesperson said that all arrested criminals and recovered items were handed over to appropriate agencies for further necessary actions.

He further said that the troops held stakeholders’ meetings at different locations as part of non-kinetic operation of Operation SAFE HAVEN.

He noted that the meetings were aimed at building peace, trust and confidence amongst the locals, Fulani leaders and herders to discuss measures at tackling insecurity in their area of responsibility during the period.

Onyeuko also stated that troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE had on June 3, arrested some criminal gang members at Ayiin town in Logo Local Government Area of Benue.

He said that the criminals were among others involved in kidnapping and other related criminal activities in the area.

He added that the arrested criminals and weapons recovered have been handed over to appropriate agencies for further action.

Police rescued 37 murder, kidnap, human trafficking victims in 2 months in Edo – CP

The Police Command in Edo, on Wednesday, said it had rescued no fewer than 37 victims of kidnapping, murder and human trafficking in the state in the last two months.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Phillip Ogbadu, made the disclosure while briefing newsmen on the activities of the command within the period, in Benin.

Ogbadu explained that the figure comprised 10 murder victims, 21 kidnap victims and six human trafficking victims.

He also disclosed that within the period under review, 320 suspects were arrested for various crimes, out of whom 150 had been charged to court.

The police commissioner explained that the suspects were arrested for alleged kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, murder, human trafficking, and unlawful possession of firearms.

Ogbadu added that some exhibits recovered within the period included two pump action, three English-made double-barrel guns and 18 locally-made cut-to-size guns.

Other exhibits, he said, were four locally-made pistols, 22 live ammunitions, 81 live cartridges and assorted vehicles.

Police arrest 7 suspected cult members in Lagos

The Police Command in Lagos State has arrested seven suspected cult members and recovered some dangerous weapons from them.

This is contained in a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.

Adejobi said operatives from Morogbo Division, arrested the suspects on Sunday after it got an information that some men suspected to be cult members were meeting at a hotel in Morogbo.

He said the suspects were arrested with a locally made pistol, two live cartridges, one axe and assorted charms.

Adejobi said the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, had ordered that the case be transferred to the Command’s Special Squad, Ikeja, for investigation.

He said the CP reiterated the command’s commitment to tackle cultism and all sorts of crimes in the state.

“The CP calls on all residents to join hands with the police to improve on the already established security architecture of the state,” he added.

In another development, police operatives attached to Ipakodo Division, Ikorodu, on June 7 arrested one Kayode Adeyanju, 45, for allegedly defiling his 14-year-old daughter.

The spokesman said that the girl reported the case at Ipakodo Police Station on June 7.

Adejobi said the CP also ordered that the case be transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command for further investigation.
